FAQs

Please refer to our COVID-19 Policy for health and safety questions.

Why does PC focus on movement?

Crammed living situations with no yards. Parks that don’t feel safe. Underfunded schools cutting recess and gym. 2 out of 3 children are NOT moving their bodies enough.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends children 6 years and older get a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity daily and younger children should be even more active throughout the day. SFUSD Kindergarten and 1st graders only receive 45 minutes of Physical Education twice per week, with only 35 minutes of unstructured play time per day. Lack of physical activity and play is contributing to learning and behavior challenges, poor mental and physical health, and faltering social skills in our children.

At Project Commotion we understand that movement can foster healthy development in many domains: supporting students’ ability to balance and increase their strength, fostering collaboration and relationship-building skills, promoting self-awareness and self-regulation, providing opportunities to process emotions and heal trauma. Intentional movement aids in holistic wellness. And, movement is fun!

What should I pack for class?

  • Students should wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move and play in. No jeans please!

  • Wear shoes that are easy to take on and off—our gym is a no-shoes zone.

  • Be sure to bring a water bottle!

What if I miss a class?

We understand that sometimes students need to miss class for a variety of reasons. It is especially important that families keep their children home if they are having any symptoms of illness. If you know you are going to miss class, please call Project Commotion (415) 252-8059 so staff can prepare for a smaller class size. If you have paid for a full session and then miss a class Project Commotion can credit you for a future class or offer a refund.

How do I pay?

Project Commotion accepts cash, card, and check for payment.

  • In-Person: Before, during, or after your session, a staff member can help you with payment at the front desk.

  • Online: We accept online payments through PayPal. The link to pay can be found on the page of the program that you are enrolled in.

  • By Phone (Card only): Call Project Commotion (415) 252-8059 and let the staff member know that you wish to pay by card for your classes. Staff will guide you through the steps.

  • By Mail (Check only): Mail a check to: Project Commotion 2095 Harrison St. San Francisco, CA 94110

What if I’m late?

We encourage students to be on time so we can begin class as a community. That being said, we understand that life happens and you may be late! Due to health and safety concerns, we can only accept students within the drop off window: 5 minutes before class begins and 5 minutes after class begins.

We acknowledge that this can be restrictive for some families based on other commitments and community needs. Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic we are working to keep staff, students, and families as safe and healthy as possible which means implementing more restrictive policies than usual. If this policy would inhibit you and your child(ren) from coming to Project Commotion, please reach out to us at info@projectcommotion.org

Can I leave my child during their class?

Parents/caretakers will not be permitted in the facility, but will sign their student in and out of class at the patio gate. If your child is having trouble with transition and needs a parent close by, teachers will work on a case-by -case basis for the parent to observe from the studio window or other distanced space.

Where do I park?

  • Street parking is available around the neighborhood though it tends to fill up quickly.

  • There is a small loading zone outside the Project Commotion patio on Harrison St. that caregivers can use for drop-off, but it is not a long term parking spot.

  • There is a small lot next to Franklin Square Park with driveway entrance on 17th street

What transit line drops off closest to Project Commotion?

  • 5 blocks away from 16th St Mission Bart station

  • 3 blocks away from the 22, 27, 33, and 55 bus lines at 16th and Shotwell, and 16th and Bryant

What happens at an Intake/Observation Session?

Project Commotion conducts an intake session for every new student that plans to participate in ongoing programming. Intake sessions help us to get to know your child and individualize their experience in the program.

A Project Commotion instructor will conduct your intake session, this may be done via Zoom, a phone call, or in-person depending on health and safety guidelines and your personal preferences. We will fill out Project Commotion's Intake Form together, to begin to get to know you and your child. Then, we observe your child as they play and explore our studio (or your home space if connecting virtually), working with them at their own pace. This allows us to understand how your child relates to the environment, and to us. We may ask you to participate, or we may ask you to observe. Next, we will discuss with you an appropriate starting point for your child, whether that be in virtual or in-person private lessons or in-person group classes. During this discussion, we invite you to share any additional information about your child, and ask any questions that you may have about our program and philosophy.

How does Project Commotion support children with diverse needs?

Project Commotion infuses movement with opportunities for social-emotional learning and relationship-building. Our staff are trained and consistently working to learn more about offering services that support students with diverse needs. Staff can offer physical support for students with developmental movement delays or differences. They can also offer social-emotional learning and a safe, sensory-friendly learning environment for students’ whose needs are related to their communication styles and sensory experiences.

If you have specific questions about how our program can support your child’s needs, or just want to learn more about our curriculum, please contact us. Keep in mind that we are a small business – we appreciate your patience if we are unable to respond to inquiries within 48 hours. Please feel free to follow-up with us if you do not receive a reply within that time frame.
