Capoeira
Capoeira is an African-Brazilian art form that “weaves fighting, music, dance, and rituals into a strategy by which people live, struggle, celebrate, and survive together.” Its roots are embedded in the African slavery history of Brazil in the 1600’s. The art arose out of injustice and oppression, as slaves were forced to learn how to defend themselves, disguising their techniques within the charade of a dance.
Classes incorporate the movements of capoeira, fundamentals of tumbling and acrobatics, music and rhythm, and partner work. Please dress in sweatpants and t-shirt.Classes are open to students of all levels. For Wednesday evening music classes: please bring your berimbau! Tuesday 9:15 and Friday 5pm classes are for parents and beginners! Our capoeira classes are taught by PC staff, under the guidance of Mestre Urubu Malandro of Capoeira Ijexa. Feldenkrais® Classes and 1-on-1 Sessions
The Feldenkrais Method® is a mind-body approach to learning, developing awareness, and discovering comfort and fluidity through movement.
In Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons, a practitioner verbally leads students through an exploration developmental movement patterns. Functional Integration® (FI) sessions are hands-on individual lessons in which a practitioner uses gentle, guided touch and verbal instruction to help illuminate a student's awareness of his/her physical and emotional patterns and choices. Both applications of the method (ATM and FI) provide opportunities to explore movement, reveal habits, and discover new possibilities. Benefits of Feldenkrais sessions may include: - Increased body awareness, comfort, mobiiity, balance, flexibility - Stress relief - Improved sleep and/or breath - Reduction of pain from injury or repetitive stress - Alleviation from discomfort that may result from neurological conditions, chronic pain, arthritis, and other conditions - Better self-use in what you do, from day-to-day activities to high-level performance skills. Please come by to join us for an Awareness Through Movement class, or call to schedule a 1-on-1 session in our low-cost Community Clinic. Please contact Susan if you have further questions. |
